Can you fix the door without refinishing the whole thing?

Yes, when an adjustment or a repair to the hinges, handle or latch is suitable. That does not automatically include sanding and refinishing the whole door.

We check hinge wear and screw support, the gap around the leaf, threshold clearance and where the latch meets the strike. The frame and timber condition are assessed before planing or moving hardware. We protect the floor and nearby finishes, make the suitable hinge, fixing or strike repair, then test the complete swing and latch from both sides. The result is recorded as an operation repair; whole-door refinishing remains a separate scope.

Can I keep my existing timber door?

We inspect the damaged part, surrounding timber and any moisture source, including the bottom rail, frame and hinge or lock area. A local split in otherwise sound timber may suit a compatible adhesive repair and controlled clamping; deep rot, a failed fixing area or movement through a joint may require a new timber section or replacement. On a glazed door, the pane and glazing support are protected and checked separately. A cosmetic fill is not a substitute for restoring sound support.

Keeping visible timber and choosing a painted finish are different outcomes. Old paint can conceal filler, repairs, mixed timber or marks, so an even bare-timber colour cannot be confirmed in advance. Discuss the existing coating and a suitable finish or sample area with us before full preparation is agreed. If old repairs remain visible, compare retaining that character with a painted finish rather than assuming stripping will make the door look new.

Preparation and refinishing of retained timber

Before sanding, we protect glazing, hardware, floors and adjoining paint, and decide which coatings can remain. Loose or unsound coating is removed and suitable retained surfaces are sanded without unnecessarily changing door edges or profiles. Repairable surface defects are filled and sanded after the underlying timber repair has stabilised. Bare timber and repaired areas receive the compatible sealer or primer required by the chosen system, followed by the agreed topcoat; a clear or stained finish follows its own complete compatible system. Drying and recoating follow the product and site conditions.

Will I still be able to use and secure the doorway?

Tell us if this is your main entrance or the only practical way into the home. Before work starts, discuss when the door needs to come off, when it can be refitted and how access will be managed.

Removal and refitting are planned around secure access and the finish requirements, without promising same-day rehanging for every door. After refitting, we check that hinges and handles are secure, the leaf clears the frame and floor, and the lock or latch operates without rubbing on fresh coating. The agreed faces and edges, any retained marks and the final opening and closing are recorded with the customer.

Compare the complete scopes: timber repair, preparation, hardware, rehanging and final finish versus a replacement door and any frame or finishing work. Restoration is not automatically cheaper, faster or suitable for every door. Timing follows the agreed work and product requirements.

  When a timber door binds after rain and releases in dry weather, we check moisture exposure and the door’s support before removing timber. A small adjustment may be suitable, but shaving a swollen edge without checking the water source can leave the original problem in place and create an excessive gap once the door dries.
