Cupboard doors and drawers: adjust, replace hardware or repair the cabinet?

A crooked door or troublesome drawer can often be approached as a local repair when the cabinet and fixing areas remain sound and suitable hardware can be fitted. We separate the moving part from its support: adjusting a hinge, replacing a drawer runner — the sliding rail mechanism — and repairing a damaged cabinet panel solve different problems.

The corner door leans into the next door: adjust or replace hinges?

Adjustment is worth checking when the hinges and mounting plates are secure, the panel is sound and the mechanism is not bent or broken. We look at both leaves of a folding corner door, their connection to the cabinet and any supporting catch. Moving one adjustment can change how the linked leaves meet, so the full opening and closing movement matters.

If a hinge has worn or broken, adjustment cannot restore it. The replacement needs the correct opening geometry, door overlay (how the closed door covers the cabinet edge) and mounting arrangement. Replacing a specialist corner hinge with an ordinary hinge may change the clearance beside the adjacent door. We identify the existing system and agree any alteration before drilling or converting the door arrangement.

The screws are tight, but the door slips again a week later

We first find what is moving. An adjustment screw slipping in metal hardware is different from a mounting screw turning without grip in the cabinet panel. Repeated tightening is not a useful final repair if the connection will not hold its position. Support a loose door and avoid continuing to swing it from a partly detached hinge.

Where the surrounding panel is sound, a compatible fixing repair or suitable repair plate may allow the existing cabinet and door to stay. The plate must suit the hinge and leave enough sound material for its own fixings. If the panel is swollen, crumbling, split or damaged beyond the local fixing area, panel repair or replacement needs to be compared instead. A larger screw or adhesive is not automatically the right answer.

The drawer slides out after closing, especially when full

Check the drawer type, cabinet support and runner position before assuming a soft-close part has failed. An ordinary runner, a soft-close runner and a push-to-open system are designed to behave differently. We compare the empty drawer with its normal contents, check for obstruction and inspect level, alignment and the retaining or closing function of that particular system.

If an intact runner is fitted out of position, correction may be enough. If the retention or closing component is damaged, the matching part or runner assembly may need replacing. A damaged box or loose cabinet support needs its own repair. Load ratings apply to the selected hardware and installation; a heavier-rated runner cannot correct a poorly supported cabinet. Do not use extra weight as a way to keep the drawer shut.

The soft-close drawer stops near the end and needs a hard push

Do not force it past the resistance. We check for an item behind or beside the drawer, a protruding fixing, correct seating and the relationship between both runners. The soft-close trigger or adapter is checked against the actual product instructions; resetting a mechanism intended for another design can be the wrong approach.

If the drawer fits and runs freely but the identified closing component is broken, replacing that component or its specified runner set may retain the box and front. If the runners are skewed or the cabinet is out of position, those conditions need correcting first. Completion includes repeated closing checks, not simply showing that a strong push can shut it once.

The old hinge or runner is unavailable: can the cabinet stay?

Often it can, but a part that looks similar is not necessarily a direct replacement. For a hinge we compare the door drilling, overlay, opening angle and mounting plate. For a runner we compare mounting type, installed length, clearance, load suitability and how the drawer front and box connect. A number stamped into one component may not identify the complete replacement assembly.

We first check an exact spare, then a compatible replacement set. Some retrofits need new fixing positions or changes to the drawer box; those changes, the retained appearance and any loss of usable space should be agreed before cutting. Where the original system forms part of the metal drawer sides, replacing only a loose rail may not be possible. If the cabinet is still sound, compare hardware plus modification against replacing the drawer or affected cabinet component, rather than assuming a full kitchen replacement.

What we can arrange, and what the quote covers

Mel One can assess cupboard hinges, drawer runners, handles and affected cabinet panels as part of Brisbane home repairs. We list each faulty item, identify parts and support repairs, then fit or adjust the accepted components and test the neighbouring doors or drawers as well. A separate visit may be needed when an old part must be measured and ordered.

Quote factors include the number of items, part matching and supply, removal and refitting, sound fixing repairs, any drawer or panel modification, alignment and finishing. A hardware-only job is different from rebuilding a damaged panel. Tell us if you want existing fronts and handles retained, and whether a colour or hardware change is acceptable.

Discuss cupboard and drawer repairs

Send the faulty item and the whole cabinet

A few targeted details can distinguish adjustment from a part order or cabinet repair. Send photos by the contact method agreed with our team; the enquiry form does not need to identify the hinge model for you.

  • Whole cupboard/drawer, uneven gaps and the affected hinge or runner in place.
  • Visible brand or markings; number of affected items and any previous repair.
  • For self-opening or stiff drawers, describe empty/loaded behaviour and where resistance occurs.
  • State which fronts, handles or finishes should be retained; do not dismantle a hanging door for photos.

Send photos of the problem

The form below does not accept photo uploads. Email photos with your name, suburb and the issue covered by this guide. You can also submit the form first and send photos when we reply.
